Pledge Wall And Quotes
Simon Jeal
Labour
Penge and Cator, Bromley
“It shocks me that while Bromley is one of the most affluent boroughs in London there are so many families and children struggling and going hungry, including in our ward. During my current term I’ve been working with Bromley Relief in Need, Bromley Brighter Beginnings and other charities and organisations with projects and other immediate solutions to help - but we need leadership from Bromley Council and a strategy to end child poverty in the Borough - I am happy to make this pledge and commit to continue pushing for action if I am re-elected.”
Richard Honess
Labour
St Mary Cray, Bromley
“This is important to me because of the individuals who suffer from child poverty. Individual Boroughs can talk about it's levels being better than others or rising/falling faster than others, but that does not matter to the individuals in EVERY area and Borough that suffers from it. One is one too many”
Chris Price
Labour
St Paul’s Cray, Bromley
“Child poverty is on the rise again in one of the richest countries in the world. We recognise that this is a political decision. When Universal Credit was increased in 2020 poverty levels went down, now it has been reduced they are increasing again. Child poverty is not inevitable.”
Clair Farrier
Labour
East Finchley, Barnet
“This links well with our Labour manifesto, and we are working hard to get a Labour Council elected in Barnet. The CPAG manifesto supports ours, and I will promote as many of the actions as possible when we are elected.”
William Relton
Green Party
Willesden Green, Brent
“I find it shocking that in the 21st Century, with all the wealth that has been accumulated in London, that there is a need for this organisaiton. Childhood poverty is unacceptable and needs to be ended NOW.”
Tony McPartlan
Labour
Plaidstow, Bromley
“London is a wonderful city but there is so much more we should and could be doing to eliminate child poverty”
Paul Convery
Labour
Caledonian Ward, Islington
“Islington still has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the country despite improvement over the past 20 years. Like the rest of my colleagues in Islington Labour, I am determined we eliminate child poverty over the next generation.”
Charley Hasted
Liberal Democrats
Herne Hill and Loughborough Junction, Lambeth
“At times as a child we lived in poverty. I got involved in politics partially because I never want another child to know the shame of hiding in a classroom trying to eat 2 dry weetabix for lunch because there was nothing else to take in for lunch that day. I will always fight to end poverty for everyone but especially children who are hit so hard by something they have so little power to change.”
Will Connolly
Liberal Democrats
Beckenham and Copers Cope, Bromley
“Working in the charity sector since 2013, I have learnt about the struggles of children living in poverty. This must be a priority for London. I pledge to do everything in my power to make a difference.”
Arran Angus
Liberal Democrats
Forest Ward, Waltham Forest
“It is criminal that successive governments have allowed child poverty to increase. It should be a collective priority to eradicate child poverty in our city.”
Paul Dimoldenberg
Labour
Hyde Park, Westminster
“Eradicating child poverty is a major political issue to residents in parts of Hyde Park Ward in the heart of Westminster. We need a Council that will take this issue seriously.”
Joseph Dyer
Liberal Democrats
Grove Green, Waltham Forest
“This is very important to me because so many children are suffering because of finding themselves caught up in poverty due to no fault of their own, and we must address this issue with proper planning in the community with view that most of us can help, let's come together and make it happen.”
Peter Furniss
Liberal Democrats
Plaistow, Bromley
“No child (or anyone) should suffer the limitations and damage of poverty.”
Nikos Souslous
Labour
Fulham Reach, Hammersmith and Fulham
“H&F Labour has long fought against child poverty in our borough and we have introduced free breakfast for all primary school pupils and have launched a pioneering pilot scheme at two local secondary schools providing free lunches to all children. We are also working closely with schools, Imperial College London, community groups and local businesses to provide opportunities to our borough's children. If re-elected, we will continue to work towards reducing child poverty in H&F and beyond.”
Nancy Jirira
Liberal Democrats
Fortune Green, Camden
“No child should ever feel or think that they are poor. Yet more than half children from African and Caribbean are growing up in poverty - lack of money, food, housing and no access to own an IT equipment.”
Melanie Collins
Green Party
Upminster, Havering
“We are one of the richest nations on Earth, yet child poverty has been rising since 2010 and, with living costs soaring, the numbers affected are likely to increase. We need a council that will take this issue seriously. I will fight to support the London Child Poverty Alliance in its aims.”
Sharon Holder
Labour
Lillie, Hammersmith and Fulham
“Every child matters and no child should be left behind.”
Elizabeth Booker
Labour
Little Ilford, Newham
“As a charity leader, working in the area of child welfare and anti-poverty I am passionate about eradicating child poverty! I comit to making this a key deliverable area in my ward if I am elected!”
Edmund Frondigoun
Labour
St Pancras and Somers Town, Camden
“St Pancras and Somers Town is one of the most deprived wards in London -our mission is and always will be to lift children out of poverty, through housing reform, better job opportunities, and better education services- that's why I'm taking this pledge.”
Irina von Wiese
Liberal Democrats
Borough and Bankside, Southwark
“As former Vice Chair of the Human Rights Subcommittee in the European Parliament and human rights lawyer, I find it both shocking and unacceptable that children in our city, one of the richest in the world, grow up in poverty. As a councillor I will use my powers to combat child poverty and wider social issues in our Borough and beyond, through direct intervention, constituency work and making the right investment decisions.”
Phillip Glanville
Labour
Hackney (current Mayor standing for re-election)
“As the Labour & Coop Party Candidate for Mayor of Hackney, I'm signing up on behalf of all our candidates. We support London Child Poverty Alliance & recognise the bold action needed locally and nationally to tackle child poverty, including action on food & fuel poverty, a more generous local welfare system, more council homes, investment in families at every age & much much more in our poverty reduction framework.”
Victoria Oblaze
Labour
Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets
“So many Children are been deprived of simple amenities because their parents can’t afford them. In a western world we should not be having child poverty! Government and local authorities should do more to eradicate child poverty and it should be our priority. Our Borough is doing the best they could and is doing something about it but more need to be done and the central government should make it their priority too in supporting the local authorities to eradicate it throughout UK!”
Val Shawcross
Labour
Mayoral candidate for Croydon
“Croydon faces a Tsunami of poverty with the cost of living crisis, the reduction in real wages, the gig economy, the impact of Brexit and raises in taxation. The poverty facing parents and children here is implicated in the growth of violence and crime. We can not turn our Borough around without some effective anti poverty measures from local and national government.”
Paul Convery
Labour
Caledonian, Islington
“Islington still has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the country despite improvement over the past 20 years. Like the rest of my colleagues in Islington Labour, I am determined we eliminate child poverty over the next generation.”
Adele Ward
Green Party
Golders Green, Barnet
“Barnet Green Party has been campaigning against child poverty in London since I first got involved in 2014 and it's shameful that we still need to fight for this cause, in the knowledge that so many children suffer poverty that leads to lack of food and a decent quality of housing. With energy prices rising this issue is likely to get much worse and it's completely unacceptable. We must do all we can to help the children affected and to push the government into acting to resolve this issue.”
Lara Fiorani
Liberal Democrats
Tooting Bec, Wandsworth
“Poverty takes many forms. Every child has a right to food, safety and education. No ifs, no buts. At local and national level. Every child whose basic rights are protected stands a better chance of fulfilling their potential. Directly or indirectly, as a society, as individuals, we all benefit from that.”
Jumbo Chan
Labour
Harlesden and Kensal Green, Brent
“In the capital city of one of the wealthiest in the world, it is most obscene that – due to the failures of so-called market forces – we still find children who languish in poverty. It makes a mockery of what should be one of the most joyous and indeed important times of one’s life, and scars their potential. Child poverty must be abolished, using the full force of the state if necessary.”
Ryan Jackson
Labour
Edgware, Barnet
“Looking at the latest figures from DWP I was shocked to learn that 11% of children in Edgware are living in absolute poverty – we must do all we can to tackle it.”
Pauline George
Labour
Herne Hill and Loughborough, Lambeth
“Our children are our future. They are entitled to the best. Child poverty must be eradicated”
Tabitha Potts
Liberal Democrats
Mile End, Tower Hamlets
“Our children are our future”
Alan Mitchell
Labour
Feltham West, Hounslow
“Children deserve a happy and confident future.”
David Boothroyd
Labour
Westbourne, Westminster
“Westminster may be wealthy but many local families are on low and precarious incomes. I commit to working to get the council to help: more social rent housing, more accessible affordable childcare, help for people in food poverty, and keeping bills down.”
Caroline Shah
Independent - Kingston Independent Residents Group
Kingston Gate, Kingston
“Inequality in society is increasing and having a disproportionate effect on young people and the outcomes they can hope to achieve. Councils should be working to tackle inequalities and child poverty not increasing them by kowtowing to developers and making living in London les and less affordable. I will fight for poorer people, I will fight to support the London Child Poverty Alliance in its aims. I know what it is like to grow up in a family that is struggling to get by day to day. A long time ago was the time to commit to ending child poverty in London. Now is the time to make amends for our past failures.”
Stephen Wells
Liberal Democrats
Shortlands and Park Langley, Bromley
“Child poverty is an abomination and we should focus our resources to end this crisis.”
Sam Webber
Liberal Democrats
Bromley Town, Bromley
“Very happy to support your campaign and look forward to working with you in the future especially if I am elected in 2 weeks time.”
Margot Wilson
Liberal Democrats
Sydenham, Lewisham
“If we all pull together we can give every child a chance to thrive.”
Stephen Cowan
Labour
Grove, Hammersmith and Fulham
“It is abhorrent that 37% of London's children live in poverty and that child poverty has been increasing in the UK since 2010. Britain is the fifth richest country on Earth. Poverty in all its forms has no place in an enlightened society.”
Caroline Needham
Labour
Palace and Hurlingham, Hammersmith and Fulham
“I am committed to enabling children to thrive and have all the resources they need to grow up well educated, healthy and supported to achieve their goals as adults. A poverty free childhood is the minimum society should provide for all our children.”
Clair Battaglino
Independent Network
Hackney Central, Hackney
“Having grown up in a relatively materially improvised, immigrant community I received free school meals and benefitted from other measures to help mitigate disadvantage. Others must have the same, I just wish they didn’t need it. As far as possible we must give children an equal start in life and that should be a priority of local government, not making the circumstances of the better off even nicer whist ignoring those suffering relative deprivation. In Hackney the council must ensure that children who live and attend schools & nurseries on larger roads do not have to suffer the negative impacts of pollution displaced from better off areas. All children have a right to breath clean air! Housing is extremely important and more must be done to endure higher standards in the private and social rented sector. And of course more truly affordable housing must be built. Seeing luxury flats in Hackney advertised in Singapore and China whilst we have families without adequate accommodation makes me angry. It is hard to believe that we are still talking about this stuff in 2022. What have the politicians been doing all these years?”
Grace Williams
Labour
William Morris, Waltham Forest
“The rising cost of living and poverty has an impact on nearly half the children in our borough. This is totally unacceptable. As Leader of the Council, I am absolutely committed to doing everything I can to tackle it through our support for children and families, the extra support we are making available to help families with the pandemic and the cost of living and the way we work with schools to make sure no child is left behind.”
Kim Nottage
Liberal Democrats
Stepney Green, Tower Hamlets
“Working in schools especially through the pandemic it highlighted how many families require additional support just to be able to provide food for their children.”
Dora Dixon-Fyle
Labour
Camberwell Green, Southwark
“As a child who was receiving free school meals and then as the Cabinet Member who introduced Free healthy School Meals in all our primary schools in the borough, I know what its like to miss meals or eat food that is unhealthy. I don't want to see other children in the same situation.”
Maria Rosa Linforth-Hall
Liberal Democrats
Borough and Bankside, Southwark
“No child should suffer poverty or domestic abuse. As a Councillor and also director of Su Mano Amiga I have been working hard to avoid this happening.”
Victor Chamberlain
Liberal Democrats
Borough and Bankside, Southwark
“It’s a scandal that in 2022 we are still talking about child poverty in Southwark, in London and UK!”
John Biggs
Labour
Tower Hamlets (current Mayor standing for re-election)
“We are already doing many of these asks and in some cases have been developing them further. We have already held a tackling poverty commission and have a cabinet member responsible. In terms of specific work: we have protected free school meals for all primary pupils, have ambitious council house building programme, have invested additional funding this year to early years ‘born in covid’ to make up for missed opportunities, continue to offer 100 per cent council tax discounts for those on lowest incomes and this year increased funding for our resident support scheme to provide support for rising energy costs.”
Ed Davie
Labour
Streatham Hill West and Thornton, Lambeth
“Child poverty blights lives and causes lifetime harm. It is preventable as the last Labour Government proved by halving it. We must restore the duty for central and local government to measure and have strategies to eliminate it completely.”
Midnight Ross
Labour
Haggerston, Hackney
“I absolutely pledge support to end child poverty. I grew up in poverty and received free school meals. I’m now a trust governor for a school committed to providing healthy, balanced school meals and supporting families. We can go wider in tackling all forms of child poverty so every child can thrive.”
Sue Wixley
Liberal Democrats
Nine Elms, Wandsworth
“It is shameful that 4 in 10 (39%) children in Wandsworth still grow up in poverty. If elected I am committed to doing everything I can to alleviate the experience and reality of child poverty in our Wandsworth community. This includes campaigning for Wandsworth to become a London Living Wage accredited Council.”
Tyrone Scott
Green Party
Dalston, Hackney
“Having worked with London Child Poverty Alliance in the past and seen the great work you have done, I am more than happy to make this pledge publicly and support any future campaigns.”
Sudi Piggot
Liberal Democrats
Furzedown, Wandsworth
“No child or parent should need to worry about where their next meal will come from. As a parent and from a legacy refugee family, I consider this totally unacceptable.”
Paul Tibbles
Liberal Democrats
Trinity, Wandsworth
“Children are our greatest asset and our future. They deserve the best possible start in life in order to reach their full potential. However, poverty has a particularly pernicious impact on children. Poor nutrition resulting from poverty can result in immediate and life long deficits in cognitive ability and physical health. Likewise lack of stimulation due to limited access to toys, books, computers, or outside activities adversely affects cognitive and physical development. As a society we have a responsibility to ensure that children are protected from preventable suffering and also from having their future blighted by the long term consequences of deprivation.”
Vivien Lichtenstein
Green Party
Regents Park, Westminster
“That children are living in poverty in one of the richest boroughs in London and the UK as a whole is an indictment on all of us. As a councillor, I would scrutinise the budget and find where our taxes are being wasted on vanity projects, for example, and which should be spent on issues needing to be addressed as a matter of urgency, including tackling poverty".”
Sean Walsh
Green Party
Myatt’s Field, Lambeth
“No child should grow up in poverty and that childhood poverty not only exists but is growing in 21st Century Britain shows that more could and should be done. This is a cross-party issue that every decent person can agree on.”
Olu Adesanu
Independent Network
Dalston, Hackney
“I grew up and still live in Hackney - a borough in which rapid and abundant development over the past decades, has masked the poverty, deprivation and the stark inequalities in wealth that many of us grew up experiencing. I recognise that many children and young people still experience the same type of poverty in Hackney and right across London today, and I commit to working towards completely eradicating child poverty in London.”
Arran Angus
Liberal Democrats
Grove Green, Waltham Forest
“No child should be left hungry through poverty. It negatively affects their future as hungry children do less well in school.”
Ryan Jude
Labour
Lancaster Gate, Westminster
“Despite being one of the UK’s richest boroughs, 41.29% of children in Westminster are in poverty. This is shameful. We must aspire to do better. We will if elected this May.”
Michael Jones
Liberal Democrats
Penge and Cator, Bromley
“This is of vital importance to me and if elected I would strive to push Bromley into actually doing something about this locally..”
Mahmood Faiz
Liberal Democrats
Larkswood, Waltham Forest
“I aim to work closely with local, national and charitable organisation to eradicate child poverty.”
Ashburn Holder
Liberal Democrats
Churchfields, Redbridge
“No child in London (or anywhere in the UK) should suffer as a result of poverty, or poverty related issues. The imbalance and injustices poverty creates must be 'levelled up' so that an equal and fair society is enjoyed by all. It is my heartfelt goal and belief that poverty must be eradicated, in all its forms. This is one of the reasons I am standing in this local Council election 2022. I stand to be able to serve & bring about change - this is my pledge.”
Janet Grauberg
Liberal Democrats
West Hampstead, Camden
“As a school governor, and a volunteer at a local food hub, I see the impact of child poverty week in, week out. There is much more that, working together, communities and councils can do.”
Kim Arrowsmith
Green Party
Upminster, Havering
“Because I work in one of the most economically deprived areas of London and see the effect of poverty on children and how it limits their life chances.”
Simon Anthony
Green Party
Northbury, Barking and Dagenham
“I am a teacher. I have worked for thirty years helping children grow to be effective and happy adults in a sustainable society - even if the curriculum I was expect to deliver was not intended to achieve that aim. Children are not only our future but they deserve to have a future of their own.”
Rebecca Jones
Liberal Democrats
Bethnal Green West, Tower Hamlets
“Child poverty is a real issue in our communities and we as local politicians must work to eradicate it, every child deserves the best start in life and that starts with the eradication of poverty.”
Ian Wingfield
Labour
St Giles, Southwark
“Poverty is a root cause of many health problems and poor educational attainment for children. It is important that councils promote social policies aimed at raising children out of poverty through their housing, educational and social services. I commit myself to doing so.”
Helen Dennis
Labour
Chaucer, Southwark
“Thank you for this crucial campaign. If re-elected I will do all I can with colleagues to find solutions for Southwark families - especially with the worsening cost of living crisis.”
David Hughes
Green Party
Cranham, Havering
“Given how much food is wasted in this country and how wealthy the country is it should embarrass us all that so many British children go hungry every day.”
Julie Setchfield
Labour
Fairfield, Croydon
“No child should be living in poverty in our capital city so I pledge to do all I can to tackle it in my community.”
Victoria Mills
Labour
Peckham Rye, Southwark
“Ensuring every penny of FSM funding goes to the eligible child will be one of my priorities for the next four years.”
Rachel Blake
Labour
Bow East, Tower Hamlets
“I represent an area where more than half of children are living in poverty. I will champion policies and programmes which will end child poverty including building council homes and supporting Children’s centres.”
Caroline Woodley
Labour
Cazenove, Hackney
“To face living a life in poverty, starting in childhood, is unacceptable.”
Natalia Perez
Labour
White City, Hammersmith and Fulham
“I am shocked by the impact of the cost of living and consequences on the children in our communities. It is unbelievable and heart breaking that children are going hungry. I have worked in the Advice and Welfare sector and see the consequences of the welfare reform and increase in demand for food banks. This can't be happening in one of the strongest economies in the word! I am very happy to work in collaboration with Child Poverty London to tackle and end child poverty in London.”
